The traditional Allstate Sugar Bowl college football game, which was scheduled to take place on Wednesday at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, has been postponed until Thursday after the attack that left at least 10 people dead.
“The 2025 College Football Playoff quarterfinals at the Allstate Sugar Bowl have been postponed until tomorrow. We will communicate further details as they become available,” the game’s organizing committee said via social media. This was later confirmed at a press conference by Allstate Sugar Bowl executive director Jeff Hundley. “For now that’s the plan,” Hundley said.
The attack that caused the postponement of the game occurred in the early hours of Wednesday morning on Bourbon Street, a popular French Quarter, where dozens of people were celebrating the New Year and preparing to enjoy the college football quarterfinal game.
Local police information confirmed that the attacker was shot dead by police officers after he got out of the vehicle and fired several shots. “He was determined to cause the carnage and the damage that he did. It was intentional behavior. This man was trying to run over as many people as possible,” said Police Commissioner Anne Kirkpatrick.
The Sugar Bowl has been held since 1935. This edition would pit the Georgia Bulldogs, the second best team in college football, against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the number three seed.
The NFL talks about a safe Super Bowl
The NFL has reacted quickly and issued a statement assuring that Super Bowl LIX on February 9 will be adequately secured at the Caesars Superdome.“The NFL and the local host committee have been working in collaboration with local, state and federal agencies over the past two years and have developed comprehensive security plans. These planning sessions will continue as they do with all major NFL events and we are confident that attendees will have a safe and enjoyable experience at the Super Bowl,” the league wrote in a statement.
“We are deeply saddened by the news of the devastating incident in New Orleans. Our thoughts are with the victims, the New Orleans community and all those affected,” the NFL statement added. Super Bowl LIX on February 9 will be the eighth to be played at the Caesars Superdome.
