The San Francisco 49ers have lost confidence in Brock Purdy, they haven’t given him an extension and appear to be on track to draft a quarterback

One of the biggest storylines of the NFL offseason is the contract extension currently being sought by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. Reports say the QB is aiming for $50 million or more per year on average to continue with the team.

However, the reality is that talks between the front office and the player are currently stalled. There’s been no report of significant progress in the negotiations-only that both sides still want to continue together.

Just in case, the 49ers signed Mac Jones in free agency, a quarterback with experience, and notably, when he was selected in the first round of the 2021 draft, it was rumored that 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan had him as one of his top options.

The 49ers are interested in drafting a quarterback

Bill Bender, an analyst from Sporting News, predicted that the 49ers will select Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard in the fifth round with the No. 147 overall pick.

“Leonard (6’4″, 216 lbs) is a dual-threat quarterback who racked up 906 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns with the Irish last season. How effective can he be as a passer? Leonard struggled during the first half of the season but settled in with a 68.2% completion rate during Notre Dame’s run to the national championship game,” Bender wrote. “He was a hot-and-cold passer at times and will need to develop more consistency to stick as a backup. Leonard could compete for the third QB spot with Tanner Mordecai on the 49ers. Working with Klay Kubiak in San Francisco would help Leonard improve those skills.”

Throughout his college career, Leonard passed for 7,311 yards, 45 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions. However, he’s still a raw talent in need of development. That said, Kyle Shanahan is known for working well with quarterbacks in those situations, and Leonard could be brought along behind Brock Purdy and Mac Jones.
