Tom Brady, the NFL legend who dominated the gridiron for 23 seasons, is now taking on a new role that’s proving to be as challenging as any he faced on the field. In his first season as a color commentator for FOX Sports’ “America’s Game of the Week,” Brady is learning that there’s no game plan for the broadcasting booth.
Speaking candidly before his Week 4 assignment – a high-stakes matchup between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Philadelphia Eagles – Brady admitted that transitioning from quarterback to commentator is more complicated than he anticipated.
“It’s a whole new career, and I’m learning it on the fly,” Brady told Fox News Digital. “There’s no hiding. It’s not like there’s really a practice field.”
You can’t practice a live game
The New England Patriots great, who partnered with Abbott and the Big Ten Conference for the “We Give Blood Drive,”shared how his new gig has unique challenges compared to his time on the field. While game reps were routine in his playing days, there’s no way to fully prepare for live commentary.
“You can’t just go into the studio and start repping a practice game. I did that, but it’s a lot different when real things are happening in real time,” he said. Although he’s facing a steep learning curve, Brady is embracing the journey, applying the same work ethic that made him a seven-time Super Bowl champion.
Brady knows the importance of coaching and constructive criticism, and he’s fully aware that he’s not going to be perfect from the start. “You just got to give yourself a little grace but also understand there’s a lot of urgency to try to get it right,” he explained.

For Brady, the thrill of remaining connected to the game he loves is what drives him. “It’s just a great challenge, and I really enjoy being involved in the game and watching these young athletes go out there and play their hearts out.”
