You don’t often think of Tommy Lee Jones on the small screen, but the actor is set to return to television as he’s joining the cast of FX’s The Lowdown for season 2. This will mark his first TV series in decades.
The Lowdown Season 2
Unfortunately, there are no details on Tommy Lee Jones’ role, but he’s the second new addition of the season. Betty Gilpin (GLOW) joined the cast last week as a character named Ginger.
Created by Sterlin Harjo, The Lowdown follows the “gritty exploits of citizen journalist Lee Raybon (Hawke), a self-proclaimed Tulsa ‘truthstorian’ whose obsession with the truth is always getting him into trouble. While Lee’s no idealist, he’s fiercely committed to exposing corruption and unearthing the city’s hidden rot, even when it puts him at risk.” Production on the second season will take place in Tulsa, OK, this spring.
Tommy Lee Jones on TV
Tommy Lee Jones last appeared on TV in The Sunset Limited, a made-for-TV movie which aired on HBO in 2011. Jones starred alongside Samuel L. Jackson and also directed the film. Previously, he appeared in The Good Old Boy, another made-for-TV movie he directed, but his best-known TV project is Lonesome Dove, a Western mini-series which also starred Robert Duvall. Jones was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Special for his work on the miniseries.
He also appeared in episodes of Charlie’s Angels, Baretta, Barnaby Jones, and played Dr. Mark Toland in One Life to Live, one of his first major roles.
What Did We Think of The Lowdown?
Our own Alex Maidy enjoyed the first season, saying it was “probably the closest we will come to a worthy successor to The Big Lebowski.“ He added that the series features, “A great cast of characters, led by Ethan Hawke in one of the best performances of his career, [and] is amplified by the unique Tulsa setting that turns this from just another mystery limited series into a tale worthy of getting lost in.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.
