As the football season heats up, a recent exchange between Richard Sherman and Colorado star Travis Hunter has taken center stage. During an appearance on the St. Brown Podcast, Sherman, the former NFL cornerback, offered a strong take on Hunter‘s chances of playing both sides of the ball at the next level, and Hunter wasn’t having it.
Sherman, known for his outspoken views, questioned whether Hunter’s unique two-way playstyle could transition to the NFL. “We’re not playing 50 snaps on offense and 55 snaps on defense [in the NFL],” Sherman said, suggesting that NFL quarterbacks would test Hunter’s endurance late in games by repeatedly targeting him. In Sherman’s opinion, the demands of professional football might be too much for even the most versatile athlete.

But it wasn’t just Hunter’s stamina that Sherman criticized-he also took aim at Hunter’s ability as a wide receiver. He called the young athlete’s route running “bland” and suggested that Hunter’s size and skill set are better suited for a role on defense. “He’s not a special size, super dynamic route runner,” Sherman added. “He just looks more natural as a cornerback.”
Despite Sherman‘s critique, Hunter‘s performance on both sides of the ball at Colorado has been nothing short of remarkable. Last season, he logged 151 snaps in a single game, racking up over 100 receiving yards and securing a key interception. This year, he’s continued to lead his team in both offensive and defensive stats, showing no signs of slowing down.

Naturally, Hunter wasn’t pleased with Sherman’s comments. After hearing the critique, the Colorado star took to Instagram to make his thoughts clear: “Stop speaking on me and let me play football,” Hunter posted, a sharp rebuttal to Sherman’s doubts about his future as a two-way player in the NFL.
For now, Hunter remains committed to proving the critics wrong, including Sherman. Whether his NFL future includes playing both offense and defense is still up in the air, but one thing is certain-Hunter won’t stop trying to make it happen.
