The Kansas City Chiefs are preparing for their Week 4 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers this Sunday, but one familiar face will stand out when they take the field.
Former Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt, who was released from the team six years ago, has been re-signed to the roster following the injury to starting running back Isiah Pacheco.
Travis Kelce has been rooting for Kareem Hunt all this time
Hunt, who first made waves as a rookie in 2017 by leading the NFL in rushing, had a tumultuous exit from Kansas City after an off-field incident led to his release.
Since then, he spent several seasons with the Cleveland Browns, contributing solid numbers as a tandem back.
Now, at 29, he has returned to the team where his career began, looking to prove that he still has what it takes to perform at the highest level.
One player in particular is excited to have Hunt back: Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce, who spoke candidly about Hunt’s return.
“My brother from another (mother), man,”Kelce said in a media session.
“He’s a good ol’ Northeast Ohio ball player right there. He plays the game right. He really is a good friend of mine, he is a great guy. Outside of everything that happened, I always had in the back of my mind, I really hope he gets another chance. Not only here but another chance in the league to start.”
Kelce went on to express his happiness for Hunt’s return to Kansas City, saying, “Just happy to have the guy back in the building. It’s been nothing but smiles and laughs since he got back. Excited to see him back on the field on Sunday.”
Kareen Hunt, in his last chance in the NFL
Hunt’s time away from Kansas City was marked by productive but less dominant play in Cleveland, including a dip in his rushing efficiency last season.
However, his return to the Chiefs comes at a crucial time as the team looks to bolster its offense, which has faced scrutiny despite a 3-0 start.
On the practice field, Kelce noted that Hunt hasn’t missed a beat.
“Flying around, man. He looks like Kareem Hunt,” he added, offering a positive outlook for Hunt’s upcoming performance.
Hunt, who admits the journey back has been challenging, expressed his eagerness to help the team continue its winning ways.
With Pacheco sidelined, Hunt may have a significant opportunity to contribute as the Chiefs aim to remain dominant in the AFC West.
His first test will be at SoFi Stadium against the Chargers who are 2-1 to start the 2024 season.
