In a sport like football, where nerves and adrenaline run high, it’s not uncommon to witness some… ‘politically incorrect‘ behavior.
Over the many years of the NFL, we’ve seen numerous incidents where players let their tempers flare against opponents, so these kinds of scenes are not unusual.
Brawler against brawler
The latest example occurred last night during the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers, where punches were thrown between Trent Williams and Bryan Cook.
Cook struck first. Williams, trying to get up after an offensive tackle by Cook, was surprised by a quick jab from the Chiefs’ safety. In response, Williams hit with a powerful right hook to the back of Cook’s helmet as he got to his feet.
Controversy arose when the referee ejected only Williams, leaving Cook and the Chiefs without any penalties.
KCC won the game by 28-18 and remain the only unbeaten team in NFL
Although Williams was tossed from the game, SF Gate reported that he didn’t leave until the two-minute warning. While heading back to the 49ers’ locker room, he was seen chirping at the Chiefs’ sideline.
The commentator Kevin Burkhardt said this on the broadcast: “Trent Williams did not want to leave. Ejected after throwing a punch after he got punched by Bryan Cook. t’s just frustration for the 49ers, and the bottom line is they’re just overall frustrated. This doesn’t make up for the Super Bowl, you know that, but they’ve lost to [the Chiefs] twice in the Super Bowl and two more times in the regular season.“
