The next chapter of Kyler Murray‘s NFL career will unfold in Minnesota.
The former No. 1 overall pick has agreed to a one-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings, a move that gives the veteran quarterback a chance to reset after his seven-year run with the Arizona Cardinals came to an abrupt end earlier this week.
The deal is modest by quarterback standards, reportedly worth the veteran minimum for a player with his experience. But the financial terms reflect a unique situation: Arizona still owes Murray $36.8 million in guaranteed money for the 2026 season, allowing Minnesota to bring him aboard at a relatively low cost.
For the Vikings, the signing represents a calculated gamble. For Murray, it’s an opportunity to re-establish himself after a turbulent stretch that included injuries and organizational changes in Arizona.
Drafted first overall in 2019 out of University of Oklahoma, Murray quickly became one of the league’s most electrifying young quarterbacks. He was named the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year and later earned two Pro Bowl selections as he helped elevate the Cardinals‘ offense.
Yet his trajectory stalled in recent seasons. A torn ACL in 2022 was followed by additional injuries, including a foot issue in 2025 that limited him to just five games and ultimately landed him on injured reserve.
By the time the Cardinals entered the 2026 offseason with a new leadership structure, the franchise decided to move in a different direction at quarterback.
Despite the difficult ending, Murray‘s statistical production during his tenure in Arizona was significant. He finished with more than 20,000 passing yards, 121 touchdown passes, and over 3,000 rushing yards across 87 games with the franchise.
Before leaving Arizona, Murray shared a message of appreciation for the organization and its fans.
“To everyone that supported me and showed kindness to my family and I during my time in AZ, from the bottom of my heart, thank you,” Murray wrote on social media. “I wanted nothing more than to be the one to end the 77 year drought for this organization, I am sorry I failed us. I wish this community and my brothers nothing but the best.
“I am no stranger to adversity, I am prepared for whatever’s next. I trust in God and my work ethic. I truly believe my best ball is in front of me and I look forward to proving it. Godspeed.”
A fresh opportunity in Minnesota
In Minnesota, Murray will step into a quarterback room that already includes former first-round pick J.J. McCarthy. The young passer started 10 games in 2025 after returning from a torn meniscus, throwing for 1,632 yards with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
The Vikings‘ decision to add Murray creates an immediate competition under head coach Kevin O’Connell, whose offensive system has often been viewed as quarterback-friendly.
The arrangement also provides flexibility for the franchise: if Murray regains his form, Minnesota could benefit from a veteran resurgence; if McCarthy takes a step forward, the team still has a promising young starter under contract.
