Buffalo Bills defensive end Von Miller added another milestone to his illustrious career, securing his sixth sack of the season during the team’s Week 18 matchup against the New England Patriots. The sack, achieved on just Miller’s second snap of the game, came with a significant reward: a $1.5 million bonus.
The play occurred early in the first quarter when Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye was brought down for a 9-yard loss. Despite a brief review to determine credit for the sack, Miller was ultimately awarded the play, cementing his bonus.

Balancing incentives and health
Bills head coach Sean McDermott highlighted the delicate balance of protecting players while acknowledging individual goals. With the Bills already locked into the AFC’s No. 2 seed, most starters, including Miller, saw minimal action.
“It was great to see him get it early,” McDermott said. “It made things easier for me to manage his snaps and still allow him to achieve this milestone.”
Miller, in his third year with the Bills and 16th all-time in career sacks (129.5), expressed gratitude for the accomplishment. “I wasn’t even thinking about it, but my teammates kept encouraging me to get one,” Miller said. “Now, it’s all about the weeks ahead.”

Von Miller wasn’t the only player cashing in on incentives during the game. Punter Sam Martin earned a $100,000 bonus for his 25th punt inside the 20-yard line, thanks to a stellar assist from defensive back Ja’Marcus Ingram.
Wide receiver Mack Hollins also hit a performance incentive, earning a $50,000 bonus after recording his 30th reception of the season.
Running back James Cook capped off the game with a historic moment, surpassing 1,000 rushing yards and tying O.J. Simpson’s single-season franchise record of 16 rushing touchdowns.
Looking ahead to the postseason
The Bills ultimately lost the game 23-16, but with the playoffs looming, players and coaches remain focused on their ultimate goal: a Super Bowl title. For Miller and his teammates, the accomplishments in Week 18 are a testament to their camaraderie and mutual support.
