Short answer: Marvel’s Disney+ experiment started strong, but audience fatigue, high continuity demands, and uneven quality have significantly cooled enthusiasm for the MCU’s streaming output.
Back before the pandemic, excitement was sky-high when Disney+ announced an ambitious slate of Marvel series designed to supercharge subscriber growth. At the time, the idea of prestige, big-budget MCU storytelling on television felt like a no-brainer.
Fast-forward a few years, and my, how things have changed.
Why Marvel Scaled Back Its Disney+ Shows
What was once a selling point—deep interconnectivity—slowly became a barrier to entry. As the shows grew more tightly woven into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, casual fans increasingly felt that keeping up required homework. Each new theatrical release seemed to demand familiarity with multiple series, shrinking the audience rather than expanding it.
As a result, Marvel has noticeably scaled back its once-aggressive streaming ambitions. Lower-key projects—such as this week’s Wonder Man—have replaced the big, splashy limited series that were initially positioned as must-see MCU events.
The High Point: When Marvel TV Actually Worked
It’s worth remembering that the Disney+ era didn’t start badly—quite the opposite.
WandaVision was both a critical and fan hit, proving Marvel could successfully experiment with tone, structure, and genre on television. But cracks started to show quickly. By the time The Falcon and the Winter Soldier rolled around, fatigue was already setting in.
Notably, only Loki and Daredevil: Born Again have earned second seasons among the live-action shows—though to be fair, many were conceived as limited runs from the outset.
The Misses That Hurt the Brand
Some Disney+ outings may have actively damaged audience goodwill. Shows like She-Hulk and Secret Invasion were widely seen as misfires, failing to connect with fans in any meaningful way.
Even Wonder Man, which debuted this week, arrived with surprisingly little buzz. Our own critic Alex Maidy—a pretty hardcore Marvel stan—came away unimpressed, a reaction that feels emblematic of the broader mood surrounding Marvel’s streaming output right now.
