War Machine was released on Netflix last week, with many praising it as a fun ’80s throwback action flick, but could we see a sequel to the film? It’s too early to tell, but director/co-writer Patrick Hughes and star Alan Ritchson both seem keen to return to more giant alien mech action.
War Machine Sequel
War Machine stars stars Ritchson (Reacher) as a staff sergeant known only as 81 who encounters an extraterrestrial threat while enduring a grueling Army Ranger bootcamp. The film is currently sitting at #1 on Netflix’s Top 10 list, with 39.3 million views and 71.4 million hours viewed.
While speaking with ScreenRant, Hughes said he initially wrote War Machine as a “fully formed standalone story,” but if he gets the chance to continue, he knows “exactly where it’s going, and I’ve sketched it out.“
“It’s impossible not to, as a writer, to think about,” Hughes continued. “I fell in love with the character of 81, and the universe of sort of everything he’s going through. So look, if that call comes in, then yes, I’m ready to pull the trigger.“
Ritchson added, “War Machines is going to be sick. The whole thing, we got a whole thing.“
What We Thought About the Film
Our own Alex Maidy had a lot of fun with the film. “War Machine, starring up-and-coming action star Alan Ritchson, is a standard template action movie that blends Predator with Transformers, but is so much better than that reductive comparison,” he wrote in his review. “Full of gory violence and solid direction, War Machine is a blast.“
He continued, “War Machine is a fun and action-packed throwback that is one of the better action movies in recent memory. You will come to see a hero fight a giant robot alien, and you will not be disappointed. This is not a movie that changes the genre, but it exemplifies how to do action right.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.
Would you like to see a sequel to War Machine or is the film better left as a one-and-done?
