As Wrexham AFC aims for a third consecutive promotion this season, two of the club’s standout players have revealed a surprising reward they’d like from owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney if they achieve their goal.
After the Hollywood duo purchased the Welsh club in early 2021, Wrexham has experienced a remarkable ascent, climbing from the National League to League One in just two seasons.
Now, the team is eyeing a promotion to the Championship for the first time in over two decades.
Wrexham stars Paul Mullin and Elliot Lee, who were both integral to the team’s success last season, were recently named in the PFA League Two Team of the Year.
While attending the Professional Footballers’ Association event in Manchester, the duo was asked how they’d like Reynolds and McElhenney to reward them if they manage to secure yet another promotion this season.
Mullin humorously suggested a less glamorous but equally memorable destination: “Back to Butlins, we’ll go to Butlins this time so that everyone stops speaking about it.”
This lighthearted comment was a nod to the team’s much-publicized celebratory trip to Las Vegas earlier this summer, a reward from their Hollywood owners after clinching promotion to League Two.
Wrexham’s ambitions for the new season
Despite the playful request, Mullin was serious about the team’s ambitions for the 2024-25 campaign.
“Just to go out and continue doing what we’ve been doing for the last three years,” Mullin said to SPORTbible.
“We’ve got to go out and make the town proud. Keep doing that and the results will hopefully come on the back of that. Just keep doing what we’re doing and be happy doing it.”
With four points from their opening two games, Wrexham is off to a strong start in League One, and the team is among the favorites for promotion to the Championship.
With a squad full of experienced players and the continued backing of their celebrity owners, the club’s remarkable journey shows no signs of slowing down.
Whether it’s a trip to Las Vegas or a jaunt to Butlins, one thing is clear: if Wrexham achieves a third successive promotion, Reynolds and McElhenney will need to find a creative way to celebrate their team’s continued success.
