Zach Ertz in a Chiefs uniform? Why the tight end could end up as Travis Kelce’s replacement

As rumors swirl about the future of Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce, the team may soon need to find a replacement for one of the most iconic tight ends in NFL history.

If Kelce decides to retire after the 2024 season, former Philadelphia Eagles standout Zach Ertz could be a prime candidate to fill the void in Kansas City.

Is Ertz the Chiefs’ next star tight end?

Ertz, who had a resurgent season with the Washington Commanders in 2024, has become a key figure in their offense, helping rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and contributing significantly to the team’s playoff berth.

With 66 catches for 654 yards and seven touchdowns, Ertz has shown he can still be a reliable target, especially in clutch situations.

While Ertz has publicly stated his desire to stay with the Commanders, he also acknowledged that winning is his top priority.

“My mindset at this point is I’m not just going to play football just to say I’m playing football. There are so many other factors. For me, it’s just being around people that want to be the best versions of themselves, that want to win,”Ertz said.

“If I have the opportunity to go back there – if it presents itself – would be a no-brainer.”

Should Kelce decide to step away, the Chiefs will face a critical decision on how to replace his production.

While players like Peyton Hendershot, Noah Gray, and Anthony Firkser are already in the tight end room, none of them have shown the ability to take on Kelce’s massive role as the team’s top receiving threat.

Kansas City has the No. 31 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, but their most immediate need could be in free agency.

Chiefs could lure Ertz to KC

Ertz, now 34, has proven he still has plenty left in the tank and would bring valuable veteran leadership to a Super Bowl contender like the Chiefs.

“I do love my time here [in Washington],”Ertz continued.

“It was an opportunity for me to really fall back in love with the process and being able to be around people that truly love football.”

Although Ertz’s preference may be to remain in Washington, the allure of playing with Patrick Mahomes and competing for championships could be enough to lure him away.

The Chiefs are likely to explore every option to ensure they remain contenders, and Ertz’s experience and proven track record could make him an enticing target in free agency.
