It was by no means an easy knockout tie for Atltico Madrid. After securing a 2-0 lead at Camp Nou, they had to suffer to clinch their place in the UEFA Champions League semifinals at home against a Barcelona side that, at one point, threatened to knock them out of the competition – although in the end, it was a completely different story.
Diego Pablo Simeone took full advantage of this edge to become the first manager to eliminate Barcelona from the Champions League multiple times, knocking them out in the quarterfinals in 2014, 2016, and now 2026.
And they seized the moment to send a humorous message to the culs fans with a viral meme they posted on their official accounts.
Atltico Madrid’s mockery of Barcelona
The official Atltico Madrid account on X (Twitter) posted a video of a lion trying to attack a crew, only for it to turn out that the animal was not dangerous at all – it was actually a dog.
It was a perfect analogy for Barcelona: they looked all-powerful at first, but in the end proved completely harmless and were left carrying the burden of their Champions League elimination.
Now, Atltico Madrid awaits their semifinal opponent, who will emerge from the tie in which Arsenal holds a goal advantage. In a hypothetical Champions League final, they could face Paris Saint-Germain or the winner of the series between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
