Behind Ty Simpson’s decision to turn down a “life-changing” sum of money for a chance in the NFL

For many college stars, the smartest move now is not always the NFL. With NIL money continuing to reshape the sport, staying in school can sometimes offer a bigger short-term reward than turning professional.

That was the reality facing Ty Simpson, who admitted he seriously considered an enormous offer before deciding to chase his NFL dream instead.

The former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback revealed that one proposal stood out above all the others.

“The last offer was definitely the one I just had to sit down and consider because it would have been life-changing money,” said Ty Simpson.

“It would have made me the highest-paid player in college. And it was something to where I was like, ‘All right. I can’t just ignore this. Like I have to sit down and think about it.’ And that’s kind of how I am. I don’t want to do anything sporadic. I want to sit down and think it all out.

“And it really just came down to how I wanted to be remembered, and what do I want to do?”

Why the money was not enough to change his path

Reports around Simpson‘s decision suggested the biggest push came from the Miami Hurricanes, with a stunning $6.5 million offer placed in front of him.

For a player weighing one more college season against an uncertain draft range, it was the kind of figure that could have altered everything.

Instead, Simpson focused on the bigger picture. Another year in college may have brought more money immediately, but it also would have delayed the professional career he has been working toward for years.

That is where a conversation with Nick Saban appears to have carried real weight.

The Nick Saban advice that helped settle the choice

“I actually talked to Coach Saban about this, and the things he was talking about were: ‘Do you want to play football in college, or do you want to play football professionally?’ And he was like, ‘Take the money out of it, take the rounds out of it, what do you want to do next year?'”

Simpson recalled. “And without a doubt and without hesitation, I said, ‘I want to play professional football.’ And he was like, ‘Well, there’s your answer.'”

That clarity ended the debate.

While the money was huge and the temptation was real, Simpson ultimately chose the NFL over one last college windfall, betting that his future will be defined by what comes next, not by the offer he left behind.
