Cleveland Browns draft picks leave Shedeur Sanders with no excuses in Year 2

When the Cleveland Browns brought in Todd Monken as the head coach to replace Kevin Stefanski, it was a statement by the front office that they weren’t pleased with how the offense was performing.

Stefanski was supposed to be an offensive mastermind, but an 8-26 record over his final two seasons forced Cleveland’s hand. Stefanski couldn’t get much out of rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders, but he was dealt a tough hand, especially due to the Deshaun Watson trade.

Still, the offense was a disaster for the past two seasons. Monken comes in with an extensive and successful resume as an offensive guru. Monken hasn’t committed to any quarterback on the roster as next season’s starter, but just about everyone wants to see Sanders win the job.

Cleveland Browns have fully retooled their wide receiver room and added franchise tackle

If he does, he won’t be able to make as many excuses as were possible in 2025. That’s because Cleveland has aggressively attacked their offensive weaknesses early in the 2026 NFL Draft. The team’s biggest needs coming into the draft were offensive tackle and wide receiver. So they did just that with their first three selections.

  • No. 9 overall: Spencer Fano, OT, Utah
  • No. 24 overall: KC Concepcion, WR, Texas A&M
  • No. 39 overall: Denzel Boston, WR, Washington

While it would be tough to envision three rookies coming into the league and dominating right away, all three of Cleveland’s picks were three of the most admired offensive prospects in the draft.

All three should help Sanders, or whichever quarterback is behind center in 2026. Monken clearly didn’t like what he saw from the Browns’ wide receiver room in 2025, and he has quickly fixed it.
