The 2026 NBA season has already produced a spotlight battle – and it isn’t just between teams, but between two rookies chasing Rookie of the Year honors. Cooper Flagg, the Dallas Mavericks‘ top draft pick, is living up to the hype, but his former Duke teammate, Kon Knueppel, is also making waves in Charlotte.
Flagg, the first overall pick, is being counted on to carry the Mavericks into a new era after Luka Doncic‘s controversial exit.
The 19-year-old has impressed early, averaging 20.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game on 48.2 percent shooting.
He’s taken on the primary ball-handling duties while superstar teammate Kyrie Irving is sidelined with an ACL injury – a role that would challenge even veterans.

“Cooper is just an amazing player, and that’s not even just gassing it,” Irving said in an interview with Dallas Hoops Journal.
“At 19 years old, doing the things that he’s doing within our league is very special… I don’t want to mince my words either. He’s doing things that some of the greats, even before him, didn’t do. He’s chasing history.”
Even with Irving out, Flagg has held the fort for Dallas, stepping into a primary ball-handler role despite being a natural frontcourt player – a challenge he has embraced with poise.
Flagg vs. Knueppel: A rookie showdown
Meanwhile, Knueppel, the fourth pick in the draft and Flagg‘s former Duke teammate, has emerged as a strong contender for ROTY in Charlotte.
Knueppel has carved out a standout rookie campaign, averaging 18.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game while shooting 48.4 percent from the field, 43.1 percent from three, and 90.2 percent from the free-throw line.
Those numbers that put him on pace for a 50-40-90 season, and former NBA champion Jeff Teague sided with Knueppel over Flagg for ROTY for that reason.
“I think Cooper Flagg‘s having a good rookie year, a phenomenal rookie year actually, but it comes with a lot of opportunity,” Teague said.
“The reason I think Kon Knueppel‘s year is better is because he’s with some gunners, and he’s not supposed to be doing what he’s doing.”
“He is not supposed to be doing that, efficient, he doing 50-40-90 as a rookie is insane.”
Teague pointed out that Knueppel‘s performance is even more impressive given the context: he’s surrounded by established scorers like LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller and is trying to lift the Hornets into playoff contention – a responsibility that comes with added pressure.
By contrast, Flagg‘s Mavericks are still building toward long-term goals, leaving him with less immediate team impact.
