Deion Sanders delivered a heartfelt and emotional message of support after former Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia went unselected in the 2026 NFL Draft, a surprising outcome to many given his decorated college career and strong pre-draft buzz.
Pavia, who rose to national prominence during the 2025 season, entered the draft as a 2025 Heisman Trophy finalist and runner-up to Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza, the No. 1 overall pick. Despite his production and accolades, he ultimately became one of the biggest omissions of the entire draft.
The Vanderbilt Commodores quarterback was expected by many analysts to hear his name called at some point over the seven rounds, especially after leading his program to a historic breakthrough season. Instead, he went undrafted, making him the first Heisman Trophy finalist since 2014 to be left out entirely.
Pavia‘s final college season showcased his dual-threat ability and leadership. He passed for 3,539 yards and 29 touchdowns while also adding 862 rushing yards and 10 scores on the ground. His play helped Vanderbilt achieve its first-ever 10-win season and secure consecutive bowl appearances, marking a significant turnaround for the program.

Despite those accomplishments, concerns about his transition to the NFL lingered throughout the evaluation process. Much of the skepticism centered around his height and whether his playing style would translate effectively at the professional level.
While many scouts praised his toughness and competitiveness, those physical concerns ultimately proved too much as he went undrafted.
Sanders’ message sparks support across football community
As the draft concluded, 10 quarterbacks were selected across all seven rounds, with several more quickly signing undrafted free agent deals. Pavia, however, remained unsigned more than 12 hours after the event ended, leaving his immediate future in professional football uncertain and prompting widespread discussion among fans and analysts.
The situation drew attention from across the football world, including Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders, who is known for his support of players and his mentorship of young athletes. Sanders took to social media to offer encouragement directly to Pavia.
“I BELIEVE IN YOU MY MAN! Stay strong and don’t let up,” Sanders wrote on X. “Show them what time it is and never allow them to forget. Much Love & God bless you.”
Pavia‘s draft slide was particularly surprising given his confidence heading into the event. He had previously called himself the “best player in the country” and told ESPN he was “100-percent” sure he would be drafted, making the outcome even more difficult to process publicly.
Still, while the draft did not go in his favor, Pavia‘s football journey is not necessarily over. NFL teams frequently sign undrafted players in the days following the draft, and roster adjustments or training camp performances often open unexpected doors.
Whether Pavia‘s NFL opportunity comes immediately or later, his college rsum ensures he will remain a name to watch as his professional path continues to unfold.
