Fans say James Rodrguez “Is done” as 2026 World Cup doubts grow

Colombian star James Rodrguez made his first start for Minnesota United in the US Open Cup, but his performance raised more questions than answers after playing 66 minutes, still far from his best version.

The ’10’ returned to action after overcoming health issues following the last FIFA international window with the Colombia national team. He made his starting debut for his new club in an alternative lineup, during a cup match with a rotated squad.

The round-of-16 clash against Sacramento Republic ended 0-0 in regular time and was decided on penalties, with Minnesota advancing 9-8 in a tightly contested shootout.

Even deployed as a false ‘9’, James failed to make a difference in attack. Although he recorded an 84% pass accuracy and an acceptable rating, his overall impact was limited and failed to convince fans and analysts.

Harsh criticism mounts against James Rodrguez

Criticism quickly followed, especially among Colombia national team supporters, who are increasingly concerned about his level ahead of the 2026 World Cup. On social media, reactions were blunt, with some claiming he is “finished physically and sportingly” and others saying he is “far from his best level.”

One viral message summed up the mood: “It’s good that he’s getting minutes, but if he doesn’t cover the pitch, the James from the Brazil World Cup is never coming back.” Others even questioned his place in a future World Cup squad.

Beyond the numbers, the takeaway is clear: James Rodrguez still has much to prove. Meanwhile, Minnesota United now turn their focus to their next MLS fixture against Portland Timbers, where the Colombian will look to regain rhythm and rediscover his top form.
