The 20-year-old Argentine footballer used his Instagram account to post a photograph of himself alongside Vincius Jr., attempting to clarify the situation after becoming the target of heavy criticism for allegedly insulting the Brazilian star.

“I want to clarify that at no time did I direct racist insults to Vincius Jr., who regrettably misunderstood what he thought he heard. I was never racist with anyone and I regret the threats I received from Real Madrid players,” he wrote on Instagram.

UEFA Anti-Racism Protocol Activated

After Vincius Jr.’s goal in the 49th minute-followed by his signature celebration dance-the Brazilian forward reported to referee Franois Letexier that he had been subjected to a racist insult by Gianluca Prestianni. This prompted the activation of UEFA’s anti-racism protocol.

For approximately 10 minutes, the match was paused, with heated discussions unfolding, though play eventually resumed. Opinions remain divided, with several Benfica figures, including head coach Jos Mourinho, defending their player. All eyes are now on UEFA to see whether any sanction will be imposed.
