Is A.J. Brown out? Eagles land replacement in trade-up for USC’s Makai Lemon

The Philadelphia Eagles shook up the NFL Draft 2026 with one of the most strategic moves of the first round. In a rare deal between fierce NFC East rivals, the Eagles’ front office struck an agreement with the Dallas Cowboys to move up to the No. 20 overall pick-a decision that not only adds young talent, but also all but confirms that A.J. Brown‘s era in the “City of Brotherly Love” is nearing its end.

Makai Lemon: Jalen Hurts’ new weapon

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, Philadelphia sent picks 23, 114, and 137 to Dallas in exchange for the No. 20 selection and a seventh-round pick. That three-spot jump allowed the Eagles to secure Makai Lemon, the explosive wide receiver out of USC Trojans.

Adam Schefter of ESPN noted that selecting Lemon is a key chess move. His arrival strengthens Jalen Hurts‘ arsenal ahead of Brown’s expected departure, as multiple reports indicate the star receiver could be traded to the New England Patriots once the market window opens in June.

Profile of a rising star

Lemon, who will turn 22 this summer, enters the NFL following a steady rise with the USC Trojans. His 2025-26 campaign served as his definitive breakout in front of scouts:

Elite production: 79 receptions and 1,156 yards

Red-zone threat: 11 touchdowns, establishing him as the top target in California

A deal with the “enemy”

History repeats itself between Philadelphia and Dallas. The last time these rivals traded in the first round was in 2021, when the Eagles moved up to select DeVonta Smith. Now, Lemon shares that unique connection with Smith, forming a duo of receivers from elite programs that promises pure explosiveness.

Still, for Eagles fans, excitement over Lemon comes with a sense of nostalgia. While the new receiver brings plenty of promise, the outcome of the A.J. Brown situation remains the main storyline. All signs point to this summer closing a successful chapter-making way for a new era in Philadelphia’s offense.
