Jose Chilavert sends cruel message after Cesar Luis Menotti death: We monkeys are still alive

Jose Luis Chilavert, the former Paraguayan goalkeeper who played for Real Zaragoza, has posted a critical message following the death of Argentine icon Cesar Luis Menotti.

Former Atletico Madrid and Barcelona coach Menotti passed away on Sunday at the age of 85, after being hospitalised for a month with severe anemia.

Menotti led his nation to their first ever World Cup win on home soil with a 3-1 win over the Netherlands, as extra-time goals from tournament top scorer Mario Kempes and teammate Daniel Bertoni sealed the win.

His death prompted tributes from all across the football world as they mourned the former World Cup winner, recognized as a hero in his home nation. But not everyone – especially former Paraguay goalkeeper Chilavert – remembered him so fondly.

Why did Chilavert dislike Menotti?

Chilavert, who gained notoriety for scoring freekicks and penalties during his wild career, posted a message on social media, which appeared to be a sarcastic repetition of Menotti‘s criticism of him.

Responding to a user on X, who wrote: “‘Chilavert comes, then the monkey’. Wise words from Menotti.”, the 58-year-old replied: “We monkeys are still alive and we don’t have drug addict children. In the 90s we f***ed them all with Velez.”

Menotti and Chilavert had a long-standing feud dating back to the days when Chilavert was goalkeeper at Velez Sarsfield from 1991 to 2000.

At the time, Menotti was coaching Argentinian outfit Independiente de Avellaneda and it was clear their mutual dislike was something they had in common.

“I think what we should do with Chilavert is to take him to schools so that children know what man was like 40,000,000 years ago,” Menotti once said of Chilavert.
