Kemba Walker is making a triumphant return to the Charlotte Hornets, but this time in a new role that promises to elevate the team in unexpected ways. The 34-year-old former NBA star, who recently announced his retirement after an illustrious 12-season career, is joining the Hornets as a player enhancement coach.
“Basketball will forever be a part of my life so this isn’t goodbye. I’m excited for what’s next,” Walker shared in his heartfelt retirement statement on social media.
What’s next for the four-time NBA All-Star is an opportunity to work alongside first-year head coach Charles Lee, bringing his wealth of experience and deep-rooted connection to the franchise.
Walker played for four NBA teams
Walker spent eight seasons with the Hornets after being drafted ninth overall in 2011, setting franchise records in points, field goals, three-pointers, free throws, and minutes played. He is also second in assists and third in steals and games played for Charlotte.
During his NBA career, Walker also had stints with the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, and Dallas Mavericks. Despite a promising start, his time with the Knicks was cut short due to knee injuries, although he did leave fans with unforgettable performances, including a 44-point game against the Wizards and a Christmas Day triple-double.
After a brief tenure with the Mavericks, Walker finished his professional career overseas with AS Monaco, compiling impressive career averages of 19.3 points, 5.3 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game.
Kemba will bring his experience to the team
Walker’s return to Charlotte is not just a homecoming but a mission to help end the Hornets’ eight-season playoff drought. His extensive knowledge of the game and personal history with the team are expected to be invaluable assets in his new coaching role.
Fans are thrilled to see Walker back where it all began, this time helping to mold the next generation of talent and hopefully steering the Hornets towards a much-anticipated playoff resurgence.
Stay tuned as Kemba Walker transitions from court dynamo to coaching mastermind, aiming to infuse the Charlotte Hornets with the same spirit and excellence that marked his storied career.
