Injuries are part of the game, but when they occur in the run-up to a major tournament like the World Cup, their impact is even greater.
Throughout history, several soccer stars have arrived full of expectations, excitement, and in top form, only to be sidelined by injury. Fortunately, this won’t be the case for these stars, who will make it to the event “just in time.”
A World Cup that’s also played off the field
Between recent injuries, a lack of match fitness, and rushed comebacks, there are players who have already begun this race against the clock to arrive in top condition for this long-awaited event.
One of them is Cristian Romero, a key defender for the Argentine national team. “Cuti” suffered a collateral ligament injury in his knee, and while he avoided surgery, his condition raises doubts: he might arrive without the ideal match fitness for such a demanding competition, as he had to end his season with Tottenham early.
Another case that has drawn widespread attention is that of Mikel Merino. The Arsenal and Spain midfielder suffered a bone injury-diagnosed as a stress fracture in his right foot-during a training session with the Premier League club. Following surgery in January, during which a screw was inserted into his heel, he had to use crutches and wear a cast. His situation requires the national team to monitor him closely to determine if he can perform at the highest level, but he is expected to be able to run in two or three weeks and, if he does not suffer a relapse, he would be ready for the 2026 World Cup.
Lamine Yamal has joined this unfortunate list in recent hours after suffering an injury to the biceps femoris in his left leg against Celta de Vigo. Although this diagnosis forces him to end his season with Barcelona, he is expected to recover in time to participate in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Brazil’s defender der Militao and Turkey’s midfielder Arda Gler suffered the same injury as Yamal (Gler in his right leg) and, like the young Spaniard, are expected to recover but will lack match fitness.
Beyond talent, physical condition will be a determining factor. These five players are not ruled out, but their participation is conditional: it will depend on their recovery and the match fitness they can build up in the months leading up to the tournament.
The 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19.
