The Buffalo Bills are aiming to bring championship experience to their sidelines for the 2026 season, announcing the hiring of John Fox as senior assistant coach.
Fox, who has spent decades in the NFL and college ranks, returns after a brief absence, joining a staff led by first-time head coach Joe Brady. The move is designed to provide guidance to Buffalo’s relatively young coaching corps while strengthening a team eager to reach its first Super Bowl in franchise history.
Fox is expected to work closely with defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard and his staff, all of whom are in their 40s or younger.
His extensive experience as a head coach and defensive strategist will offer a steadying influence, serving as both mentor and tactical adviser for a unit that has shown promise but seeks the polish that only a seasoned veteran can provide.
Joining Fox on Brady‘s 20-assistant staff are notable names such as Pete Carmichael Jr. handling offense and Jeff Rodgers overseeing special teams, rounding out a comprehensive coaching team.
Fox‘s journey into football coaching began after a brief playing career as a defensive back. He worked multiple one-year positions as a DB coach at various colleges before making the jump to the NFL in 1989. During the 1990s, he held positions as defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator for several NFL teams.
His work with the New York Giants in 2000, which helped them reach the Super Bowl, established Fox as a respected defensive mind capable of transforming teams’ performance.
A veteran presence with Super Bowl pedigree
Fox first gained national recognition as the head coach of the Carolina Panthers from 2002 to 2010. In only his second season, he led the Panthers to Super Bowl XXXVIII, cementing his reputation as a coach who could quickly impact a franchise.
He later achieved remarkable success with the Denver Broncos, guiding the team with Tim Tebow and later Peyton Manning, winning nearly 80% of his games and reaching the playoffs consistently.
After leaving Denver, Fox took the helm of the Chicago Bears in 2015, a tenure that proved challenging as the team went 14-34 over three seasons.
Since then, he has contributed as a senior defensive assistant with the Indianapolis Colts in 2022 and the Detroit Lions in 2023, continuing to mentor younger coaches while refining his approach.
For the Bills, Fox brings more than just tactical expertise; he brings credibility and a championship mindset. As Buffalo’s coaching staff blends youthful energy with veteran insight, Fox‘s presence could prove instrumental in converting the team’s potential into sustained playoff success.
