The hype was real. Cooper Flagg has officially been named the 2025-26 NBA Rookie of the Year, taking home the Wilt Chamberlain Trophy after a historic rookie season, the league announced Monday night.
A Blue DevilbBattle: FlaggeEdges Knueppel
In one of the most contested rookie races in recent memory, the No. 1 overall pick narrowly beat out fellow Duke standout Kon Knueppel (Charlotte Hornets) for the honor. VJ Edgecombe (Philadelphia 76ers) rounded out the top three in a class that lived up to its NBA Draft hype.
Joining Mavericks royalty
Flagg becomes just the third player in Dallas Mavericks history to earn the award, joining elite names like Luka Doni and Jason Kidd. His win also extends a Southwest Division streak, following Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle as recent winners.
Elite statistical company
Despite a difficult 26-56 record for Dallas, Flagg emerged as a franchise cornerstone. Across 70 games, he delivered standout NBA stats:
- 21.0 PPG (1st among rookies)
- 6.7 RPG
- 4.5 APG
- 1.2 SPG
He joins a rare group of players posting a 20/6/4 stat line, alongside superstars like LeBron James, Nikola Joki, and Doni.
HistoricsScoring outbursts
Flagg’s season featured record-breaking performances, including a 51-point game against the Orlando Magic, making him the youngest player in NBA history to reach that mark. He followed it with 45 points vs. the Los Angeles Lakers, totaling 96 points in two games-matching a feat only achieved by Wilt Chamberlain among rookies.
From the moment he was selected first overall, expectations were sky-high. By delivering a historic debut season and securing NBA Rookie of the Year honors, Cooper Flagg hasn’t just met them-he’s redefined them.
