Vikings are targeting their franchise QB of the future to replace Kirk Cousins

The Minnesota Vikings pulled off a pre-draft trade with the Houston Texans on Friday that brings them closer to their new franchise quarterback who will replace Kirk Cousins, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Minnesota received two 2024 picks — No. 23 (first round) and No. 232 (seventh round) — in exchange for their No. 42 (second round) and No. 188 (sixth round) in this year’s draft and a 2025 second-round pick.

Texans no longer have a first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and Vikings still hold an extra sixth-round selection. It’s possible they’re accumulating picks to move up even higher.

After Cousins joined the Atlanta Falcons in free agency, Minnesota signed 2018 third overall pick Sam Darnold as a temporary replacement and Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said Thursday that they’re not a lock to draft a QB, which now sounds like a lie.

Which QBs will be available for Vikings?

This year’s draft includes a deep pool of quarterbacks, including Caleb Williams, Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels, but they’ll be off the board in the top five.

The remaining potential first-round quarterbacks are not as talented, though Brock Purdy was “Mr. Irrelevant” and he led the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl.

If the Vikings can move up a bit higher, it’s possible they draft Bo Nix out of Eugene with the 18th overall selection.
