What next for the Los Angeles Lakers’ coaching search? Another target looks set to snub them

Three weeks after parting ways with head coach J.B. Bickerstaff, the Cleveland Cavaliers have a leading candidate for his replacement: James Borrego, currently the associate head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans.

This is a move that could have an impact on the Los Angeles Lakers’ own search for a new head coach, with Borrego having been rumored to be a candidate of interest to them.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported on “Get Up” that Borrego is gaining traction in Cleveland’s coaching search, which could push LA in another direction.

James Borrego … he’s getting momentum in Cleveland,” Windhorst stated.

“He’s expected to interview there early this week as a potential leading candidate.”

Borrego brings significant NBA head coaching experience, having served as the interim head coach for the Orlando Magic in 2015 and as the head coach for the Charlotte Hornets from 2018 to 2022.

Despite a career record of 148-183 (.447), Borrego is highly regarded as a product of Gregg Popovich’s coaching tree, winning NBA titles as an assistant with the San Antonio Spurs in 2005 and 2007. His reputation has grown following the Pelicans’ 49-33 season.

What are the Lakers thinking now Dan Hurley has rejected them?

While the Cavaliers focus on Borrego, he remains a candidate for the Lakers, who are searching for a head coach after Dan Hurley declined their offer.

Hurley, who turned down a six-year deal worth $70 million in LA, will continue pursuing NCAA titles with UConn, despite being considered the “best available coach” by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Lakers have since shifted their attention to Borrego and JJ Redick, aiming to fill the position before the NBA draft on June 26. However, they will have to work quickly to try and tempt Borrego out of his apparent closeness to Cleveland.
